Stories & pictures about birds & nature, mostly in my backyard.....with occasional bits of pets, knitting, weather, food & family thrown in for variety.
Hi Deb, That woodpecker has been visiting the nectar feeder all weekend (I think it might be a juvenile). I finally had the camera and took the picture through the kitchen window (the window screen makes it a little blurry). I've seen more red-spotted purples this summer than ever before. I checked my field guide and you're right at the northern edge of "uncommon" for their summer range.
Hi Mom, The feeder is full of nectar, I wonder if Woody's tongue is long enough to slurp some up through the tiny port hole?
Thanks Mary C, they are such entertaining little birds.
Hi Lisa, Isn't it funny how the woodpeckers somehow figure out there's something they like in that feeder?
Hi Susan, Sometimes birds do the funniest things--I'm just glad I finally had the camera close by to catch this little guy in the act.
Hi Jayne, I'm thinking Woody must be getting some nectar from this feeder as often as he's been visiting it lately.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Even though I don't always get a chance to respond right away, please know that I (and many others!) enjoy reading them.
Such a nice blog. I hope you will create another post like this.
ReplyDeleteThat caption made me laugh out loud!
ReplyDeleteAnd your red spotted purple is beautiful. I don't think we get those here.
What a HOOT! Why not, they need a sweet treat too. LOL
ReplyDeleteMOM
That was really cute, Ruthie. It had me laughing, too.
ReplyDeleteI have heard about this situation before but I have never seen it. The downy looks funny on the hummer's feeder.
ReplyDeleteHee hee!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't succeed at first... :c)
