Is She the Last One?

On this chilly and rainy October 2nd, I was amazed to see this lone little hummingbird still sipping nectar from my deck feeder. I wonder if she's the last one remaining from the hummers in my yard this summer? Or is she a migrant from up north, taking a little rest and sustenance in order to continue her long journey?
Safe Travels Little Hummingbird! I'll be looking forward to seeing you again next spring!

THose northern RTHU are really tough. We still have two here. They are immatures. It won't be long and they will be gone.

Almost like clockwork we see our last hummber on September 15th. This year it was on the 10th. So ours are long gone now. It makes sense that yours would stick around a little longer?

Hmmm, hummber? That's like a hummbering mird . . . or something. (I'm still tired today, can you tell?)

I couldn't believe we had a hummingbird today also. We have a couple of geranium hanging baskets and sure enough there was one in the pretty pink one. They didn't have to leave because of all the warm weather we were having and all the feeders and flowers around yet. I don't expect see to many more.

Wow, I would have thought most of them were further South by now. Hope she makes the journey. So sweet.

You will have to share the secret of attracting hummingbirds--I had two buzz my flowers this summer, so I rushed out some sugar solution into the hummer feeder--and then...NOTHING. One zoomed by, but didn't feed, and that was it.

It is good to keep the feeders out in case there are still stragglers. I have not seen any at my feeders but yesterday I thought I had one zoom by me out in my yard.

Looks like you'll be finishing that vest just in time, weather-wise.

Amazing what knitting can do for a crappy day! Even better when I can be listening to Book on CD. (listening to The Lace Reader right now.)

Hi Everyone,
I think this really WAS the final hummer of the season as I haven't seen any since I took this picture. The weather's taken a turn for the worse and hopefully the hummers got out of here ahead of it.

Donna, I'm not sure what the secret is--for several years I was only able to attract them during migration and then a couple finally started staying all summer and now I have at least 5-6 that stay all summer.
I keep 5 nectar feeders out all around my house, some in trees and on hooks in the flower gardens and on my deck. You can experiment with different flowers--I had good luck with my Cardinal Climber this summer and Black & Blue Salvia is excellent for attracting them also.
