We've been watching the mom for weeks now (in fact, she was here again at 2:30 this afternoon), but she always comes by herself. A couple of the neighbors have seen these fawns -- even on our yard -- but this is the first time we've actually seen them with our own eyes.
This mineral block has been out since last fall and this is the first time we've seen a deer eating it!

We've lived in this house for over 20 years and this is the first time we've seen fawns in the backyard. What a special treat.

I've got some pictures from last October of a couple fawns in the woods still showing some spots. These two could have been born later in the spring.
Thanks Jayne. They're a little more cautious than their mom. I can walk right out in the yard when she's there now and she doesn't run away, but these little guys spotted us as soon as we moved up on the deck. We're just hoping they stay in our yard and the neighbor's and don't decide to expand their horizons by trying to cross the highway.
What a thrill! We've been on the hill surrounded by woods since 1969and never ever seen fawns. I did see a pair on County 1 last week standing in the middle of the highway looking lost, They finally scampered off.

We have a mama and twin fawns living in our woods this year but even though adult deer graze in our little hay field frequently, we've never seen the fawns out in the open. Our driveway winds through the woods and we get a glimpse of the fawns along there every now and then. We drive slowly in and out for fear we'll round a curve and come upon one standing in the road!

ReplyDeleteI saw a young buck at the cabin the other day. I think I kind of spooked him and he kind of spooked me and we just sort of glanced at each other a moment as he scaled the cliff behind the cabin. We were about 20 yards from each other.
What a thrill!!! They sure look good. Did Mom come too? Enjoy them while they are little.

It's always fun to see the deer so close. I think they're sometimes rather curious about us too and if you stand still long enough that they get used to you, they will usually carry on with whatever they're doing.

The fawns were by themselves -- I'm sure their mom didn't know they had gone off exploring on their own.

ReplyDeleteThe first 4 I took from down in the basement (we have a walkout patio and they were about 20 yards away).
The last 2 pics were taken from the deck while I was sitting out there. I thought they had left the yard and I was surprised to see they had just taken a detour!
Oh Ruthie, they are so precious! How lucky that you finally got to see them. Sadly, any fawns that we've seen on our property were spotted by the dogs first, and, well... you can guess the rest. :( Some day they will be able to travel through our woods unharmed, but that will be a few more years off, I'm sure. (P.S. I like your new profile pic!)
ReplyDeleteLucky, lucky, lucky! In the 6 years we've lived in our house by the woods, we've seen deer a few times and fawns only twice. They're so cute, I would probably be willing to share a couple of shrubs if any came to my yard.
