Can you stand any more possum stuff?

We had a little dusting of snow overnight and the temperature was just below freezing, so when I let Sophie out this morning, here's what I saw on the concrete patio:
It was still warm enough for the possums to be active overnight and this one visited the ground feeder tray I have outside the back door. I love the way its warm little feet melted through the snow on the patio to leave these perfect footprints.

I took the spotlight outside and saw their footprints all around the house, down the driveway and out into the street. Mr. Johnson confirmed that they had walked up the street because he saw the tracks when he took Sophie for their early morning walk. He said he could tell it was possums by how their long tail drag lines.

I hope the possums don't become a nuisance in the neighborhood. I know of a couple neighborhood jerks who would just love the chance to shoot these little critters--even though they're harmless.

Those are just the cutest little paw prints I've ever seen.

I recognize those paw prints! Got a resident possum here that is quite comfortable eating catfood on the porch.

Possum feet are so cute, I really like to have them around. They clean up bird seed under the feeders all year 'round. They even come up on the deck to eat cat food and the cats don't seem to mind sharing with them.

Cute. Larry Weber, the Friday night speaker at Sax Zim, spent a lot of his presentation on how to identify animal tracks. It was very informative, though I don't think he had any slides of possum tracks!

I love your possum prints and the possum posts. I have one that lives under my garage and everytime I see him I think of you!! HA! ;o). He was out there tonight and actually looked cute to me as he ran away.

I am so going out there tomorrow morning to see if I can see his tracks! Such cute little paw prints in your photos.

I like possums--someone shoot them just because they're not cute? Say it ain't so.
Neat prints.

...those little footprints just melt my heart...so cute!

Well, hopefully the possum will have more food to eat in your back-40 in the warmer months and will be saved from being a nuisance. Of course if the population gets too large, I guess it would be a problem for folks. Hopefully it has a natural predator around that'll take care of that.

Opossums have the cutest footprints and they show up so well in your photo! It doesn't snow where I live, so I've never seen anything like these.

Thanks Lynne, I think so too.

Hi Meggie,
In addition to birdseed, my possums like dog food too.

Hi Mom,
I hope these possums stay around and I get the chance to see their babies (if they have any).

Thanks Shelley. It's hard to mistake them for any other animal tracks.

I think so too, Mon@rch.

Thanks Deb. Do you ever see possums as far north as where you live? I think their range continues to expand.

Hi Jaime,
These were the easiest ones ever--right outside my back door!

Hi Kallen,
I like to watch them try and "run" away too--poor, slow little critters! They don't have a chance once they accidentally get out on the road.

Hi Donna,
I think the neighbors shoot them because they think they're a nuisance (just like the raccoons and squirrels in the neighborhood). I say that's what you get if you live in the country with woods nearby, but unfortunately a lot of people don't share my views or have any desire to co-exist with these wild creatures.

Thanks Kelly--I always envision their cute little pink feet when I see these tracks.

Hi Red,
I don't think there are any coyotes nearby, so the only "natural" predators that I can think of are the roads past our house. I know some people go out of their way to run over possums.

Thanks Jayne.

Hi Diane,
This little bit of snow was just perfect for seeing lots of different footprints.

I have always loved their little thumbs. Saw them a lot when I lived in Oregon. Lots of road kill possums. Haven't seen nearly as many here.

Well those are sweet foot prints!
A few years back we had an Opposum in our yard...and it saw us and played dead in a tree...what a silly critter!

I think I've found a kindred spirit here! I thought I was the only one delighted to see those little tracks on the snowed patio ...I stand and watch as they eat up the seeds below the feeders.I also worry about some
mean spirited neighbors...who don't share my love of nature and nocturnal visitors.

Hi Kathy,
I never really noticed their thumbs before, but since they've been hanging around and I've been watching them closer, it's neat to see the way they use their "hands" to climb trees. A pretty amazing little animal!

Hi Dawn,
They are fun to watch, but I agree--silly critters too.

Hi Naturegirl,
Welcome to my blog and thanks for stopping by. I enjoy watching the possums eating out of my feeders too (even though they are kind of messy). I'm always amazed that they aren't afraid to come so close to the house.
