It's really cold and windy tonight (about -4 with a windchill of about -25 right now). These two deer didn't stay around long and I'm sure they were heading back to the shelter of the woods over in the next block. I'm always amazed that wild animals and birds have the ability to survive in weather like this.
I keep these ground feeders filled with corn now, so the deer, bunnies and squirrels have plenty to eat during this cold weather when all the other vegetation is covered in snow. (I'm also hoping it will keep them from eating the little trees and shrubs I planted last fall.)

Hey Ruth: I, too, feed the deer in my area hoping they will then ignore some of my favorite vegetation. So far so good.... I was checking out my feeder today and finally realized that I definitely have both Downey AND Hairy woodpeckers. When they came to the feeder at the same time, I could really notice the difference in their size.
Brrrrrr Ruthie. It is cold up your way. THe wildlife in your area are lucky you feed them.
You sure have an interesting yard. All I saw early this morning was a rabbit. It was so cold even the squirrels weren't moving.
OK, so I am a featherweight. It's in the 20's here today and we are feeling frozen. I shant complain any longer.... brrrrrrrrr.... just reading your post made me feel colder! Sweet visitors!

Good to hear about your deer too. So far, the corn seems to be enough food and they're not eating anything else.

Us Minnesotans have gotten wimpy over the years--yesterday was one of the coldest days and nights we've had in a while and even I had a bit of a hard time staying warm (weatherman's predicting 30's by the weekend...that sounds pretty good!)

Hey Jayne, you're not a featherweight--it's not supposed to be in the 20's in Georgia! I hope you're not getting snow along with those cold temps (that wouuld be the ultimate insult)

It seems most of the country are getting the high winds and arctic air. We had 67 last weekend and rain. Now we are dipping to the teens with 35 mph wind gusts and I'm freezing - numbing - fingers tingling - can't find gloves or hats. Just not prepared.
I worry about the birds, too, and wondered if the feeders would still be standing when I got home from work. They were standing, but empty of seed. The birds were very hungry.

Sometimes on really windy days, the seed blows out of some of my feeders--especially the open tray and hopper feeders.
