Are you ready.....

...for some football?

Can it be that football season has arrived already? Yes, I know it's only pre-season and these games really don't count, but August? Geez!

My Spousal Unit is a pretty big football fan, played football in high school and knows who plays for what team, call plays before the coaches, makes calls before the refs, etc. I, on the other hand, am not a football fan at all. Oh, I'll sit there when the game is on, but I'm usually knitting or something. I say I'm a Green Bay Packers fan, just to get his dander up.

To be perfectly honest, I think there's way too much adoration for professional athletes, especially by children. And I think it's truly obscene what those athletes get paid. The Minnesota Vikings signed a new player this year....I believe his contract was $50 million for 8 years with a $17 million signing bonus. Yes, that's right, I typed m-i-l-l-i-o-n. Give me a break--for playing football?? I'm heading towards a rant here and I think I'd better just take a few deep, slow breaths.....

There, that's better....

I just have to remember the things that make my life truly meaningful....

and give me great joy.....

Have a great weekend everyone!

I like your pretty pictures because they calm me down when I get riled up about professional sports. I refuse to support professional teams in any way because of the ridiculous salaries that are paid. There are so many people who do worthwhile jobs helping humanity who are more deserving.

I saw that football started tonite, it's how long until the Super Bowl [puke-puke, oh that feels better]. I would rather sit and watch my birds at all the feeders, and the kittens romping around with my kitty on my lap. Baseball and basketball, now those are my games and throw in a game of soccer once in awhile. Of course reading a good book takes first place, John Grisham or a good mystery Patricia Cornwell, Agatha Christy, Sue Grafton, Tony Hillerman, Diane Mott Davidson to name a few, plus Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler, oh the list could go on and on and on.

The salaries are obscene, but we enjoy watching some NFL games. Football and some golf are the only sports we really watch much. Husband likes to get the NFL Sunday ticket through Directv and see all the action in high def. It does make it more enjoyable. I do like your alternative views however!

Ruthie - I saw and admired that photo of the cardinal and ? -- and I realized that I envy all of the folks who get these beautiful birds in their yards. That's because we don't get cardinals here in California. Have a great weekend!

Hi Ruth,
Your comment sums up what I was going to say and didn't....about all the people who do so much to help humanity and are paid paltry sums (and can you just imagine how much $17 million could do for so many needy people?)

Hi Mom,
It's good that there are so many other things to do and watch for those of us who aren't football fans.

Hi Jayne,
My spousal unit was devastated when Monday Night Football was taken off the air. He definitely enjoys spending an afternoon watching football after all our hunting seasons are over.

Hi Mary C,
The other little bird at the feeder is a male house finch. I was also surprised to find out there are no cardinals in California once my brother moved out there. But hey, you still have lots of cool birds that we don't, like Acorn Woodpecker, Western Scrub Jay, California Quail, Anna's Hummingbird....should I keep going?

Ruthie,

Professional Sports? No way. It's the greed that bothers me.

My daughter and her boyfriend just bought a big screen TV to get ready for the season.

My "spousal unit" places bets and will watch for scores, but neither of us are fans.

I forgot to praise your photos. Wonderful.

Hi Mary,
I think professional sports definitely are here to stay. It's just that I'm bothered by some of the athletes who are such buttheads and the fact that so many young people idolize them. I just wish more young people would want to become a doctor, nurse, teacher, scientist, etc. when they grow up instead of wanting to be a professional athlete because that's where the money is.
("If wishes were horses, we'd all take a ride" is what my spousal unit tells me when I wish for impossible things)
