First monarch chrysalis was formed this morning!
There are also 4 teeny, tiny just-hatched caterpillars crawling around on their own milkweed leaf in the ranch.
Stories & pictures about birds & nature, mostly in my backyard.....with occasional bits of pets, knitting, weather, food & family thrown in for variety.

I've been so curious but too lazy to acquire milkweed and set up a ranch. Maybe next summer... I admire your energy, Ruthie!
Well, you predicted correctly. It does seem a bit late this year, doesn't it? But hopefully the weather will stay mild enough for the monarchs to migrate south in the fall. Way to go, Ruthie!
Their perfection always amazes me!
WOW!! You sure have action in your Monarch Ranch already. I think this will be an active year for you.

I love that line of gold near the top of their chrysalis. It really looks like gold to me. Wonder what its purpose is or why it's tht wonderful color? Nature--never fails to amaze me.
Hi Mare,
I consider you smart, not lazy!! If we had a heat index of 105 here, I would definitely be letting those monarch caterpillars fend for themselves outside......
Hi Mary,
Looking back in my posts from last year, the 2009 monarch ranch started up only a few days earlier. I tagged my first monarch butterfly on Aug. 16th and the last one of Sept. 10th. There were a total of 23 butterflies tagged. I hope to double that number this year.
Me too Jayne. I think it's just so amazing that a butterfly lives inside the caterpillar.
Hi Mom,
I sure hope so. Things are starting out pretty good anyway.
Me too Mollie! They're just so beautiful and unique.
